A parish with an unusual amount of history for its size
Our roots are in the church planted at Antioch by the Apostles Peter and Paul, where the disciples of Jesus Christ were first called Christians.
St George is an Antiochian Orthodox Christian parish serving Kearney and the surrounding Central Nebraska communities through prayer, discipleship, hospitality, and the sacramental life handed down from the Apostles.
In 1904 Fr Nicola Yanney was ordained here by St Raphael of Brooklyn — the first resident Orthodox priest between the Missouri and the Rockies. For two decades he rode and drove across the plains to baptize, marry, and bury the scattered faithful of five states, and he died serving them through the influenza epidemic of 1918.
